Up Greater Spotted Woodpecker Slideshow

I stumbled upon this scene in woods just outside Brighton. I could hear some distinctive bird calling, and eventually located the adult woodpecker high in a tree. But there was another call, and after a few minutes I located its source. A young greater spotted peeking out of its nest hole.

This is a small selection of shots. All were taken from a safe distance away to avoid alarming the birds. I used the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens, mounted on an EOS 40D, and supported by a Manfrotto 685B Neotec monopod and 234RC tilt head. They are occasionally quite heavily cropped.

The sequence features both male and female adults (the male has the red flash on its head) and a single juvenile.
