These shots were taken at Rottingdean on 29th August, and 1st and 5th September 2008. The light was poor on the 29th - another grey day in a terrible summer - but the tide was out and the gulls and other seabirds were feasting on the seaweed laden shore. The September shots were taken in better light, but with the tide in until late afternoon. As you can see from some of the shots, there was a strong breeze whipping up the waves. I expected to see various gulls, but had a surprise when two oystercatchers flew past at speed. The shots aren't great, but they're my first of this particular bird. The other surprise was a Mitchell B-25 bomber (in, I think, Dutch airforce livery) flying overhead. This was one of the most widely used medium-sized bombers of WWII. I used the Canon 40D for all the shots, either with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens (plus UV filter for some shots) or the EF17-40mm f/4L USM (plus polarizing filter). I used the Manfrotto 685B Neotec monopod and 234RC tilt head for support. |
